Edinburgh is one of the hardest cities in Scotland to put a fire into — and one of the easiest to put an electric one into. Between the Georgian New Town, Victorian tenements in Marchmont and Leith, conservation areas covering huge parts of the city and a large stock of modern flats with no chimney at all, traditional solid-fuel and gas fires are frequently either impossible or ruinously expensive once flue works, ventilation and consents are priced in. Inset electric fireplaces need none of that. A standard electrical connection, a properly built recess and a well-designed surround are the entire specification.
We supply and install premium electric fires across Edinburgh from our workshop and showroom in Livingston, roughly 25 to 35 minutes from the city centre on the M8. Every installation is designed as one piece of work: the fire, the joinery around it, the television recess if there is one, the lighting, and the electrical connection. That is deliberate — most disappointing fireplace installations happen because the fire was bought from one supplier, the joinery built by someone else, and nobody owned the finished result.
Which Electric Fires We Supply
We work with three ranges we trust. The Gazco eReflex range uses layered mirrored reflection to create genuine depth behind the flame, and is the closest thing to a real fire we have seen in an electric unit. The Avanti range offers excellent value across 110, 150 and 190 centimetre widths, with adjustable flame colour and brightness. The FireFX Atmos gives a bold, wide landscape flame that works particularly well beneath a large television. Fireplaces are priced separately from our media wall packages. Nothing is bundled or hidden: you see the cost of the fire, the cost of the joinery and the cost of installation as distinct lines, and you decide where the budget goes.
Tenements, Flats and Listed Properties
Edinburgh tenement flats usually have a blocked chimney breast, high ceilings, deep skirting and cornicing that must not be damaged. Our approach is to build the fire into a bespoke unit that sits against the chimney breast, with the recess formed inside our own joinery rather than by cutting into original masonry. Where a property is listed or in a conservation area, we can design the whole feature wall to be effectively freestanding, fixed discreetly and fully reversible, so original fabric stays intact. Consents remain your responsibility to confirm with the City of Edinburgh Council, but an electric fire removes the flue, vent and combustion questions entirely.
Modern apartments present the opposite problem: plasterboard partitions, limited depth and tight electrical layouts. Here we build shallow-depth designs, often using a slimline fire beneath a recessed television, and route power neatly to an existing socket position rather than assuming a new circuit.
Running Costs and Heat Output
A common question from Edinburgh customers is what the fire costs to run. Flame-effect-only operation uses very little electricity — comparable to a few LED bulbs — because the visual effect is generated by lighting rather than heat. The heater element is separate and switchable, typically offering one or two kilowatts of output, enough to take the chill off a large room quickly. In practice most customers run the flame year-round for atmosphere and use the heat only in winter, which keeps running costs sensible while still giving the room a focal point every evening.
How the Project Runs
It starts with a showroom visit or an enquiry with photographs and rough dimensions. We then survey the room, checking wall construction, socket positions, floor level and sightlines from your seating. You receive a CAD drawing showing the fire, the joinery, shelving and lighting exactly as it will be built. Manufacture takes four to six weeks in our Livingston workshop, and the on-site installation is normally one to two days. Our full six-stage process is set out step by step, and finished work is covered by a workmanship guarantee of up to five years alongside the manufacturer's warranty on the fire.
